City 2: St Petersburg

right, alarm set at 3.45 am... and yes i managed to get up. i don't know how as i'm the slowest person in the morning. phil's bestest papa took us to Cologne airport, where we checked in and got on the plane to St Petersburg. flight was good. i managed to get three seat for myself and had a good three hours of sleep on the plane. didnt realise that the ventilation was open tho and woke up with a frozen arm... oh well.., haha! :)

arrived in St Petersburg around noon-ish St Petersburg time. took the bus into the city center and then the tube to Nevsky Prospekt. walked for a while and found the most amazing hostel, Nevsky Hostel. Good location, relatively clean, good price, internet access and most importantly they had a party shower!! :)

spent 3 amazing days in St Petersburg. details about our stay to come in a few days as i'm running out of time on the computer. internet cafes are great but keep on running out of time all the time... arghh! :P (PS Winterpalace was amazing..!)

Apologies Dear Readers

many apologies for being completely rubbish at blogging! think this is my tenth attempt to update the blog so it better work this time... no Shaz around and Phil's in the shower so the odds are def higher than usual. also the internet seems sort of reliable and i'm far away from the on/off botton so theoretically there should be no problems! *fingers crossed*

right, let's finish off Cologne! the main highlight of our cycling trip around the city was of course to see the famous Cologne Cathedral. the building is described by UNESCO as an "exceptional work of human creative genius", and yes yes yes i do agree! the Dom is the largest Gothic church in Northen Europe. for me it was the Gothic architecture that caught my eye and of course the XXL SIZE of the building. it is after all one of the world's largest churches!

i'm afraid that there is no way for me to describe what i felt when walking around the church admiring 600 years of human effort to complete this astonishing building... the only thing i can say is book your flight now and go have a look for yourself..!

City 1: Cologne

morning folks! beautiful day here in Petersburg.

some backtracking before giving you all the fantastic news about Russia's cultural and former political capital.

with trustworthy germanwings i arrived in Cologne 30 min prior to scheduled arrival time on the 30th of August at the same time as Shaz whos flight was half an hour late. not very unexpected a he was flying with easyjet. Phil picked us up at the airport. great day spent mainly by the beautiful river Rheine.

on our last day in Cologne we decided to get the dust off the bicycles and hit the streets of Cologne. the first 15 min was hilarious watching Shaz who has never used a foot brake before! i was dying of laughter and nearly fell of my bike. in the end going back from the city center to Phil's place i actually thought he'd got the hang of using the brakes when i all of a sudden heard a scream from behind and saw Shaz nearly crashing into a bicycle stand on a road parallel to the one i was using. dont ask me how he ended up there... at least he managed to get back on to the road again and make it back to Phil's without any major incidents after that.

Shaz is going berserk so i better hurry up. details about St Petersburg will be added later and my experience of the most amazing shower ive ever had in my 21 years.

The Plan

The blog is set up. Not much on it at the moment. I will try keep you guys posted as we go, but please do not blame me if this does not happen regularly as i'm not sure how close it'll be between the internet cafes..! Will do my best though - promise!

I'm off on the 30th of August. There's two of us flying out of London that day but as expected we've managed to book ourselves on different flights, so gonna have to play some professional hide and seek at the airport in Germany. Could be fun..?! Hopefully, Phil will have remembered that we're on our way and will pick us up. Will spend a couple of days at Phil's place, and then the adventure begins on the 1st of September when we fly to St. Petersburg, Russia. And this time, believe it or not, we've all managed to book ourselves on the same flight, so are already making remarkable progress on the planning front..! Great. Will catch the Trans-Siberian Express and make our way through Russia, Kazakhstan and China, with stops in Moscow, Astana, Almaty, Urumqi, Xian, Beijing and Hong Kong.
